“Ondansetron Injection I.P. 8mg (4ml)”-       ONDANSETRON is related to a group of medicines called ‘anti-emetics mainly used in stopping vomiting (being sick) and nausea (feeling sick) that usually comes after cancer chemotherapy, radiation treatment, or surgery. Nausea is the worst feeling in which a person feels an urge to vomit while vomiting is the natural response to the body to forcefully remove the stomach contents.

ONDANSETRON contains ‘Ondanestron’ that works by blocking the action of a chemical in the body (serotonin) responsible for causing nausea and vomiting. As a result, ONDANSETRON reduces the feeling of nausea and vomiting caused due to situations like surgery, cancer chemotherapy, pregnancy, or motion sickness.

Take ONDANSETRON as prescribed. Your doctor will advise you on how often you take ONDANSETRON based on your medical condition. A person taking ONDANSETRON often experiences side effects that include a feeling of warmth, constipation, headache, diarrhea, headache, drowsiness, and feeling of tiredness. However, not every person faces the side effects of ONDANSETRON, and even some of the unpleasant effects of ONDANSETRON do not require medical attention.

When serotonin levels increase in the blood, it stimulates the CTZ receptor (chemoreceptor trigger zone) located in the brain responsible for controlling nausea and vomiting. ONDANSETRON acts by inhibiting the release of this serotonin, thereby preventing nausea and vomiting. 

Uses Of Ondansetron Injection

• Chemotherapy-induced Nausea and Vomiting (CINV): Ondansetron is commonly used to prevent and alleviate nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy. It is effective in both acute (occurring within 24 hours of chemotherapy) and delayed (occurring more than 24 hours after chemotherapy) phases of CINV.
• Radiation-induced nausea and Vomiting (RINV): Ondansetron is also prescribed to manage nausea and vomiting caused by radiation therapy, particularly when radiation is directed at the abdomen or the whole body.
• Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting (PONV): In surgical settings, Ondansetron can be administered to prevent postoperative nausea and vomiting, which can occur as a side effect of anesthesia or surgical procedures.

Precautions

Tell your doctor if you are suffering from uneven heart, liver problems, or any other problem. Ask your doctor if you are taking medicine for other diseases like epilepsy, cancer medicines, and abnormal heartbeats. ONDANSETRON may decrease the person’s ability to do work. Therefore, one should avoid driving or operating any machine. People with an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia), and phenylketonuria (too much protein phenylalanine in the blood) should not take ONDANSETRON as it may cause serious conditions. The patient of liver should not take more than 8 mg of ONDANSETRON daily. ONDANSETRON should be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding after consultation with a doctor. Taking ONDANSETRON with apomorphine can cause a sharp dip in blood pressure, even leading to death, so avoid its intake together.
